Ok, first the rant. I hate it when authors don't warn you that their book is part of a serial and that each book will end in a cliffhanger until the serial ends. Even worse is when you get the distinct sense that all the author really did was split a single novel so as to charge more. The "Elements of Chemistry" serial does all of this and I hate it.Having said that ....
I'm not totally opposed to serials where the combined price of all the episodes is roughly what I'd pay for a good book anyway. That's pretty much the case with the "Elements" serial as well. When you add in that book 1 in the serial was free on kindle this works out ok, with my treating the 3 parts as in effect a single book with its book 1 as just an extended sample read.
Ok, and with that, an actual review ....
The "Elements" serial was actually quite wonderful when viewed as a single "book". The plot was excellent, the writing superb and the characters amazing. (How's that for a bunch of superlatives?) I'm totally in love with the Martin, the Hero of this tale, want my daughter (who is about to start university next fall at a prestigious school) to be our heroine Kaitlyn and adore Sam and wish everyone had a best friend like her (AND love that Penny Reid has captured how real friends act unlike so many others who don't seem to understand what a healthy friendship between two women is). The emotions in this book are real, without having to resort to using any "cheap tricks". The romance is real and wonderful. Take away Martin's billions and the subplot with his dad (which are actually well done) and this could be a love story of anyone. The HEA (at the end of book 3, "Capture") makes sense and works beautifully.
All in all if the "Elements" serial had actually been a single book I'd have been sorely tempted to give it five stars (which I almost never do - less than a single handful in the ton of reviews I've written), as it's just that good. Sadly it's not a single book and for that reason I'm deducting stars. Nevertheless it really is so good that I will only deduct 1 star from each book in the serial. Hence my 4 star score for "Heat". If you can't stand the whole idea of serials then deduct more stars. If you're like me and look at this as simply one third of a real book and don't find yourself bothered by the serisluzation then add in that 5th star.

HEAT Elements of Chemistry Hypothesis Series Book 2 edition by Penny Reid Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Another great "book" in the Elements of Chemistry "series", though as I mentioned in my book 1 review, this shouldn't be considered a "series" at all. The 3 "books" that comprise this series are really just 3 parts of the same story, and really shouldn't have been separated into 3 books at all... Unfortunately, it feels like Penny Reid did this for a money grab, which is annoying, because it would have been a much more enjoyable read if it were all one book, and I would have happily paid the $8-9 for the story in it's entirety. Plus, I know this is a nitpicky thing, but it annoys me that its separated into 3 books on my kindle... I loved this story enough that it will definitely be a re-read for me, and unfortunately it's hard to see (and remember) which ones are book 1,2,3.
That said, just like in "book 1", the writing and storyline were excellent here. I LOVE LOVE Parker and Martin Sandeke together... they're quite possibly my favorite literary couple. I adored their witty back & forth, their vulnerability with each other, and their overall dynamic and chemistry. I loved that they are smart, driven, successful characters, but with some very real and believable flaws as well. They balance each other out, and are just so good together. Once again, Penny Reid NAILED IT with this story, and with these characters... I just really wish it was all 1 book!
As I've said before, Penny Reid is one of my favorite authors. Heat does not disappoint, although I was surprised at how overly angsty it was. I have learned a huge lesson I will not read books any longer that are incomplete. I will wait for the entire series to be released because I don't enjoy cliffhangers and reading bits at a time. I read too many books in between releases and not only can I not remember details, but I lose the emotional momentum I crave from a good book.
