Kyle’s life had reached a standstill. He had no job, no friends and no interest in acquiring either. All he wanted was an escape from his problems… to be alone. So it was on a whim that he bought his ticket aboard the SS Caribia, a small, cheap cruise ship headed nowhere. He never could have foreseen what would soon take place—the fierce storm, the accident that threw him to the waves. Now he finds himself in a strange new world, one he doesn’t understand. A world where inhuman creatures live and study the secrets of magic, and golden ships sail the skies. Where armor-clad adventurers travel the world and battle monsters in search of fortune and glory. Loria. With the help of his newfound friends, Kyle must come to terms with this fantastic world, unravelling the mystery surrounding his arrival and learning of his own newly awakened abilities. But he isn’t alone. There are others, powerful enemies who somehow know of his origin, and who are willing to do anything to capture him. He needs to find a way home—and fast. But does he even want to?
Loria Tower Volume 1 Jesse McMinn 9780992302047 Books
This book is essentially Kyle going to Loria and learning all about it from a group of friendly adventurers. There's some poking at his background and a hint of an antagonist, but overall it's really just a travelogue of sorts. It felt like it was about 40% longer than it needed to be in terms of the amount of story it actually contains. A good portion of it reads like the tutorial section of an RPG video game, with another significant portion being just describing the world and some character portraits. It was definitely *interesting*, and the author works everything into the actual characters' scenes rather than just breaking out into random essays, but... it mostly didn't feel like it was actually going anywhere. Several of Kyle's training sessions were especially gratuitous and never became relevant later.
The protagonist is completely genre-blind. I can only suppose that he has never played an RPG in his life.
The writing itself could use a little more polish in places, but was overall pretty good with the occasional amusing twist. The worldbuilding was a little confusing in the details sometimes, especially at the beginning, but generally it's imaginative and well thought out in terms of how an RPG universe might actually work. The descriptions don't really lack for anything.
The three stars ("okay") rating is due mostly to the sparseness of plot. It's almost to the end before anything major is even hinted at, and that in the form of a short sequence that comes completely out of the blue and then resolves itself almost equally suddenly and arbitrarily, leaving behind only a mess of vague and puzzled questions. I realize that this is meant to be the first of a set, and it gets some leeway for that... but ideally it would still be able to stand decently well on its own.

Loria Tower Volume 1 Jesse McMinn 9780992302047 Books Reviews
I don't usually post a review, but i found this book to be the exception. It was a well written and fast paced adventure. Very much looking forward to the next book.
Kept me intrigued. Didn't care for the ending, it left one unsatisfied especially since the second in the series has no release date. Still a good read. It shows a vivid imagination.
Lots to like about this world, although the story seemed a bit inconsistent in places the memory reading for example seemed to have different results depending on where the author wanted the plot to go. One nagging question I had In a universe where you can grow infinitely strong with training, what's to stop you from growing infinitely healthier, hence be immortal, or for that matter infinitely smarter? I felt the protagonist was too passive, and let his thinking and actions be guided by his companions too often.
The author inserted scenes where the central character dreamed of his childhood on earth every so often. I didn't see why, it seemed to add little to the story.
How the antagonist gained interest in Kyle was not reasonably explained. He seemed too quick to believe with very little information in the extraordinary fact that Kyle came from another world. Finally, having nothing to go back to on earth, no job no family, but more depression and alcohol, he seems to be spending a lot of effort in finding a way to go to back to that nothingness. The story would have been more fun with a character who'd embrace being in Loria, which felt like a fun world, quite a lot like a video game in a good way.
I'm a fan of the authors web-comic, but when I saw him mention the book, I was a bit skeptical, especially when writing fantasy. However, out of boredom, I decided to give the book a shot. I'm very glad that I did. I find that Jesse does a good job of painting the universe, without to0 much detail so as it detracts from the story. Kyle is easy enough to identify with, and his companions are oozing with unique character traits. In this book there also exists plenty of nods to RPG games as well. Overall I was pleasantly suprised and am actually looking forward to the next installment.
