Walking Disaster A Novel Beautiful Disaster Series Jamie McGuire 9781476712987 Books Reviews
I am really really torn. Because I feel like I waited a LONG time for this book! And I loved Beautiful Disaster somethin' fierce. And there were some really amazing reviews of this book before it was released today.
And I did like this book!! I'm glad I read it! But there were a few little things that maybe didn't sit well with me. And I'm going to be a little harsh because I paid 8 bucks for this book. Apparently I'm a $1.99 whore because that's a lot of money for a book in my world and I expect BIG things when I've paid for editing and the publisher's promotion. ;)
The little intro to the book starts with Travis as a 3 year old about to lose his mom. And while some of that did pull on my heart strings a little, it didn't seem realistic from a 3 year old's point of view. Just my humble opinion, but I work with 3 year olds and I have a 3 year old.... so it just didn't sit well with me. Maybe started me off on the wrong foot?
You have to read Beautiful Disaster before this one. This is not a stand alone book. Because this book doesn't even have the 1st meeting between Travis and Abby.
That's a pro and con in my book. A pro because all too many love stories have this hot instant "love" from the 1st look. And it can come across cheesy. But Travis needed a little more time to see Abby that way. And that's more realistic I guess. But it's a con in that while waiting for this book I guess I assumed it'd be in there. And I'd get to hear what he thought of the 1st second he saw her.
There were a few little scenes that we didn't get to see with Abby. And I LOVED those! Ok... maybe not the one where he's "bagging" some chick on a couch, but the ones that involved Abby. I feel like that's why I read the book and it offered a little excitement to what I already knew what would happen.
And we get a little peek into Travis' life... but not this long road down his past that would bore you to tears. I'm so glad for that! But sorry for you if you like to read chapters on end of boring history where you already know what happens.
I also loved being in Travis' head and watching him slowly realize he loves Abby. That was really really sweet. And the part that made it worth reading the book. The part that bumped my stars up. Because even though he is a hot mess... I couldn't help but love him.
And a hot mess he is. Over protective, womanizer, hot headed, anger-freak, and sometimes jerk.... and what is wrong with me because I still loved him. But it's only because this is fake. This is why I read. I really hope no one is reading this as a dating guide, trying to find their own hotheaded pig they so desperately want to change into a hero.
I'm also glad I knew Abby in the other book. Because she was kind of a little boring in the 1st big chunk of this one. And I wouldn't really have believed that he could have fallen so hard for her. What did he love about her besides the fact that she was hot and yet acted irritated with him? And some readers may not like her as much in this one... or like her even less if you didn't like her before. She broke my heart when she broke his. (
And sometimes it didn't really sound like I was in Travis' head... but got a little more of the author's mind. Just little places where it was a little out of character for him to have thought or said something descriptive. And what was with him only using the word "Bag?" I think I almost would have preferred he throw and "f" word in there or said "Screw" or "hook up" or "bump uglies" just to get some variety!
I was done with the name "Pigeon" by the end of BD, but after Travis' description of it and his adoration for it... I think it grew on me. A teeny tiny minuscule amount. ;) But that was definitely some good that came out of this book.
In the end, I'm so glad I read this. While there were times this went flat for me because there is a MASSIVE amount of cut and paste from the last book, I still enjoyed a good bit of it. I just wish I hadn't read BD right before to prepare.
If you loved BD I would think this is worth a read. Just not anytime soon after you've finished the first one. And wait to see if the price drops. I'm sad I paid so much for this one. (
I loved Beautiful Disaster! Walking Disaster, which is told in Travis' point of view was equally amazing. I loved everything about this book. I hung on to every word and shed a few tears. Walking Disaster had me yet again reading well into the wee hours of morning. I couldn't put this book down.
Jamie McGuire did an excellent job in portraying Travis. His internal dialogue, his emotions, his side of the story was written beautifully. My expectations of this book were set pretty high I must admit. Ms. McGuire went above and beyond my expectations. She nailed Travis Maddox's POV. Reading his story and "seeing" things from his perspective really tied up some loose ends in Beautiful Disaster.
The heartache he experienced was so emotional. I got teary eyed more than once throughout this story. Ms. McGuire is able to write with such intense feeling and thorough descriptions of what each character is going through that you almost feel like you're right there along side with them—experiencing their pain, their happiness, their joy, their sadness.
Another five star read from Jamie McGuire. I'm off to read Beautiful Wedding. I can't get enough of this series. Believe me, you won't be able to either.
So often in romance stories, you only get the females perspective with maybe a chapter or 2 of what the guy thinks. To have a whole book dedicated to hearing a familiar story from the male perspective was enlightening.
I met Abby and Travis in the first book. And, while they were disfunction bordering on crazy, it was a good read. So, to read this book and see their relationship through Travis' eyes explained a lot. Like how much he loved her, why he loved so hard, how could he think of agreeing to work for a shady character; all of it becomes clearer and explains some of his obsession with Abby.
If you have not read the first book, do it. This is truly one where you should read them in order to get the full picture.
Walking Disaster is Beautiful Disaster from Travis' POV. There is a lot of the same dialogue from Beautiful Disaster in this book. If you're looking for something completely different from BD then this is not the book for you. I loved Travis in BD and I felt like I had a really good understanding of who Travis was and what he was feeling by reading through Abby's POV in BD. This book just gives you that extra something special with Travis. A beautiful prologue where you get to see more into Travis' childhood and an amazing Epilogue that puts you into the future years later. You also get some conversations between America and Travis and Shepley and Travis that you didn't get in BD. Overall, this was just the cherry on top. If you're a hardcore Travis lover, then you'll enjoy this.
I was so excited to read the story from Travis's point of view that I bought it with one click. What a mistake. I loved Beautiful Disaster. I had hoped this book would explain what he could be such a jerk at times. But it was basically a carbon copy of the original. The writer is so darn lazy!!! I am ticked that I wasted my money on this garbage. She actually copied and pasted certain scenes from the other book. I mean they are - word for word. Apparently Travis POV is the exact same as Abby's. I wont read another book by this so called writer. I wanted to know more about the other brothers but this crap book has deterred me from spending another cent.
I was hesitant to read the same story from a different point of view. I thought it would be a waste of time since I had already read Beautiful Disaster and with so many other books out there, why spend my time with this one. Well, Jamie McGuire changed my mind regarding different POV books! I loved this book and may have enjoyed it more than the first book. It was well-written, heart-wrenching and beautiful!
