I've gotten some hearty chuckles from the majority of Barry's books, but the Travel Guide produced a most unbecoming--and thoroughly enjoyable--stream of spit-laced belly laughs. I'm still snickering. Wait till you read his descriptive 'advertisements' for all 50 states....nobody can make good-natured fun at something as well as he does. If you haven't gotten around to reading the Travel Guide, remedy it right away---you won't be sorry. I'd give this ten stars if it were possible.Tags : Dave Barry's Only Travel Guide You'll Ever Need [Dave Barry] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Dave Barry,Dave Barry's Only Travel Guide You'll Ever Need,Pan Books,0330332074,p358-45,American English,Humour
Dave Barry Only Travel Guide You'll Ever Need Dave Barry 9780330332071 Books Reviews
Like all the other Dave Barry books, this one will have you laughing literally during every paragraph unless you have the sense of humor of a dishwasher rack.
This book is absolutely hysterical. Take the following excerpt "I realize that not everybody likes to plan every step of a vacation. Some people would rather just grab a backpack and a sleeping bag, stick out their thumbs and start hitchhiking down the highway, enjoying the fun and adventure of not knowing 'what's around the bend.' Most of these people are dead within hours." If you like dry humor, this is for you.
This is very funny, even if it is a bit dated now, (like the hysterical descriptions of using the various pre-EU curriencies.) I have it on on all my devices, so i can read it whenever I have to wait...or the other day when I had to stir a dark roux for 20 minutes for a gumbo. Just set up the ipad and read while I stirred.
Dave is funny, but I think he was wise to give up his daily syndicated column. While I found myself laughing out loud at the first of his book, it became a little tiring and I ended up not finishing it. On second thought, perhaps the brevity of his weekly syndicated column, which I always enjoyed, may be a better format for his considerable talents. He strikes me as a really nice guy whom I'd enjoy knowing but who also might be a bit to full of wisecracks in the long run.
Vintage Barry! His insights are those insidious ones that you've always thought, but never had the nerve to say out loud.He skewers just about everyone he can, but with tongue-in-cheek (and new for him) apologies. A fun way to take your mind off bad news, serious decisions and the like. You can easily change your mood in one sitting. I think of him as the Julia Child of travel.
This is one of those books that I read in just one or two sittings. It was that good (and that short). Anytime a friend or loved one of mine is going on vacation or traveling for business, I encourage them to read this book prior to their departure. They almost never do, but that's their loss.
Most critics will agree that this is Barry's best book (followed closely by "Greatest Hits"). Of the Barry titles that I have read, I would tend to agree. It's very cohesive and contains illustrations that add a dash of extra hilarity to his writing.
The section where he details every state in the USA (They're Progressive!) is worth the cover price. The way he details foreign countries that he has (and hasn't) visited are hilarious as he tends to play a lot on stereotypes, but I would read the designated section for visiting any of them to see if I agree.
If you've read anything by Dave Barry before, you know what you are going to get. A quick read, a lot of laughs, and a desire for more.
Also recommended "Dave Barry's Greatest Hits" & "Dave Barry is Not Making this Up."
I always enjoy the entertaining observations of Dave Barry and wasn't disappointed in this little book. A combination of complete fabrications (he admits to being a complete liar about halfway through the book) and facts that seem too ridiculous to be true, it still holds enough humor to keep me laughing. I thought it would be a little dated but some of the craziness of travel he describes still absolutely holds true. As a sometimes very tired mom, it feels nice to have those laugh-out loud moments that Dave Barry inevitably provides.
